1939 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004

Description

On the 1939 Lincoln Wheat cent, WDDR-004 presents its Class VI spread most clearly on E PLURIBUS UNUM — where extra thickness is pronounced — and at the tips of both wheat ears and the flanking dots. Light separation is also visible on both instances of U in UNUM, the top of the E in ONE, and the uppermost grain of the right wheat ear. Wexler Variety ID: 1939 1c WDDR-004. Die markers confirm attribution and establish die state. On the obverse, a die crack runs over the designer's initials (VDB). The reverse Stage A shows a long, faint die scratch running east-by-north from the top of the left wheat ear, ending under the R in PLURIBUS; a very light NNE/SSW die crack appears in the lower right grains of the right wheat ear; and a short hooking die gouge exits the upper right side of U in UNITED. Lincoln Wheat cents are struck in 95% copper bronze. No equivalent attribution exists outside the Wexler database, so identification relies entirely on the doubling characteristics and these die markers — making a complete marker check essential before finalizing attribution.
