1939 Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-023

Description

1939 WDDO-023 is a doubled die obverse on the 1939 Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. The doubling takes the form of an extra eyelid to the south. Obverse: crisscrossing scratches through the date's left side and under the chin. A very long, wavy crack starts at the Y of LIBERTY and climbs through the back of the head, passes above the ear and through the forehead and eyebrow, then crosses the field in front of the nose and stops level with the lips. Also present: a distinctive curved scratch in the field right of the nose; a series of N-S scratches below the chin; a squiggly N-S scratch in the field over LIBERTY's TY; a series of E-W scratches through GOD's G and O; and a wavy scratch heading east from the E of WE. On the reverse, a series of mostly E-W scratches lies in the field just left of the upper right wheat tip; N-S scratches in a series run between the second T of STATES and the bottom of CENT's T; many scratches in the field between UNITED's U and the O of OF; many N-S scratches through AMERICA's C; NNW-SSE scratches between the U of UNITED and the left wheat stalk; and a hash-marked pattern of scratches above the left wheat stem.
