Description

Presenting as an extra eyelid south of the primary eyelid on Lincoln's portrait, this 1939 Lincoln Wheat Cent doubled die obverse offers one of the more distinctive diagnostics in the series — a visible doubled eyelid that serves as an immediate identification point. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1939 1¢ WDDO-016, this variety carries a notable provenance note: the original listing for WDDO-019 was found to be a duplicate of WDDO-016, and the former WDDO-019 photographs have been incorporated into this entry to demonstrate the identical doubling and markers. Obverse die markers are extensive, including heavy die scratches running through IN GOD WE TRUST, continuing well south of the second T, across Lincoln's jacket and into the field under the date, with innumerable crisscrossing die scratches present in both fields. The reverse of this coin is itself a doubled die, listed separately as WDDR-022, creating a dual doubled die — doubled on both obverse and reverse — that significantly enhances the variety's appeal. Innumerable die scratches present throughout the reverse mirror the extensive surface marking seen on the obverse.
