Description
The 1939 (D) Jefferson Nickel - Reverse of 1940 was struck at the Denver Mint as a nickel in the Jefferson Nickels Original Design 1938-2003 series. With a mintage of 3.5 million, this is a scarce issue — the lowest mintage among 7 mint variants, representing only less than 1% of total production. The obverse features Thomas Jefferson facing left and the reverse displays Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate. The 1939-D is a semi-key date with a mintage of 3,514,000 — low for the series. Denver's mint evolved from a frontier assay office into one of the nation's primary coin production facilities, opening in 1906.
