Description

This 1937-S Mercury Dime carries the second cataloged Wexler doubled die obverse for the date, exhibiting a Class II spread toward the center on the date and IN GOD WE TRUST. Wexler Variety ID: 1937-S 10c WDDO-002. Class II doubling results from a hub distorted or tilted during the secondary impression, producing spread that converges toward the design's center rather than radiating outward. Die markers aid attribution: on the obverse, a die scratch runs south from the bottom of the nose, and a circular die scratch pattern appears on the head and to the right of the bust. On the reverse, the mintmark is tilted and into the leaf — an unusual placement providing an additional confirming diagnostic beyond the obverse doubling. Adolph Weinman's Mercury Dime design, with its Winged Liberty head and fasces reverse, was in its twenty-second year of production in 1937.
