1937 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-011
ErrorDescription
Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1937 10c WDDO-011, this 1937 Philadelphia Mint Mercury Dime exhibits a Class II spread toward center visible on the date. Adolph Weinman's Winged Liberty Head design — popularly called the "Mercury" Dime though it actually depicts Liberty wearing a winged cap symbolizing freedom of thought — was struck in 90% silver from 1916 to 1945. Obverse die markers include a short die gouge running north from the top of the head to the right of the E in LIBERTY, a short die scratch running south-southwest to north-northeast left of the nose, and a die scratch running south from the underside of the nose. The reverse carries a die scratch running west-northwest to east-southeast above the M in DIME, plus a die gouge between the T and E in UNITED. This combination of obverse and reverse die markers provides reliable attribution points at moderate magnification. Discovered by Thomas McGowan, the variety represents one of eleven documented doubled die obverses for the 1937 Philadelphia date, reflecting the intense scrutiny applied to this popular Depression-era silver denomination. Reverse: A die scratch runs WNW/ESE above the M in DIME.Submitted By: Thomas McGowan Cross References: None known Obverse: A short die scratch runs SSW/NNE to the left of the nose.
