Description

Class II spread towards the center — visible on the date and IN GOD WE TRUST — characterizes this fifth Wexler-cataloged doubled die obverse for the 1937 Philadelphia Mint Mercury Dime, properly known as the Winged Liberty Head. Class II distorted hub doubling produces a distinctive center-directed displacement pattern, where design elements appear to shift inward rather than laterally. Die markers provide robust attribution support: on the obverse, a die gouge sits between the upper T and R in TRUST, while the reverse carries two small die gouges (appearing as dots) to the right of the upper E in ONE, plus a die gouge inside the D of UNITED. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1937 10c WDDO-005, this variety comes from Adolph Weinman's celebrated design during its mature production period, well after the initial minting challenges of 1916. The combination of center-directed spread on the date and motto with multiple die gouges across both sides creates a thorough diagnostic profile.
