1937 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-010
Error
Description
Exhibiting Class II distorted hub doubling with a center-directed spread on the date and IN GOD WE TRUST, this tenth documented doubled die obverse for the 1937 Philadelphia Mint Mercury Dime shows the characteristic inward displacement pattern where design elements appear to shift toward the coin's center. Class II doubling results from a distortion in the hub itself, producing a spread that differs visibly from the lateral or rotational displacement of other classes. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1937 10c WDDO-010, the die carries multiple distinct secondary markers: a small die gouge south of the ST in TRUST and a die scratch running parallel to the rim between the E and R in LIBERTY on the obverse, plus a die gouge at the rim below the M in DIME on the reverse. This combination of three independent die markers across both sides makes attribution particularly straightforward once the primary doubling is identified. The 1937 Mercury Dime was struck in 90% silver at Philadelphia during the late Depression era, and ten documented DDOs for this date reflects the sustained attention Winged Liberty Head varieties receive from the specialist research community.
