1937 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-010
Error
Description
Spread toward the center affecting E PLURIBUS UNUM and the separator dots, this 1937 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent doubled die reverse was attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1937 1c WDDR-010. The centrifugal spread direction — elements shifting inward toward the coin's center — indicates a Class III or design hub doubling mechanism where the hub displaced radially during one of the multiple impressions required to sink the die. Obverse die markers include a short NE/SW die scratch running through the hair below the D in GOD, plus a second short die scratch running NE/SW just south of the D in GOD. On the reverse, a short die scratch runs northeast from slightly right of center on the horizontal crossbar of the L in PLURIBUS. These die scratches serve as secondary diagnostics to confirm the specific die pair, independent of the doubled die characteristics. No cross-references to other attribution systems are currently known. The 1937 cent was struck during the Great Depression era when mintages had recovered from their early-1930s lows, and Philadelphia's output of 309.2 million cents consumed a substantial number of die pairs. Ten documented doubled die reverses for the 1937 date indicates sustained research interest in Depression-era Wheat Cent varieties.
