1937 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003
Error
Description
Directed toward the center of the coin, the hub doubling on this 1937 Lincoln wheat cent WDDR-003 affects the left wheat stem and the lower left portion of the left wheat ear, creating a shift that compresses the doubled image inward relative to the primary design. The Wexler Team attributed this variety as 1937 1¢ WDDR-003, with no additional CONECA or Fivaz-Stanton cross-references established. Obverse die markers are notably extensive: numerous concentric die scratches appear on the lower front of the bust, providing a distinctive fingerprint for the obverse die that would be difficult to confuse with any other die pair. The reverse carries its own marker constellation: multiple die scratches run southwest from around the lower E in STATES, while lighter die scratches extend east-southeast from the lower right side of the left wheat stem. This combination of obverse concentrics and reverse directional scratches creates a robust two-sided authentication framework. The center-directed spread is less common than outward or rotational spreads in the Lincoln cent DDR census, and its effect on the wheat stem and ear creates a visual compression that subtly narrows the gap between the doubled and primary positions. Philadelphia struck 309.2 million cents in 1937, sustaining the robust Depression-recovery production levels that kept multiple die pairs in continuous service. The wheat ears reverse, with its parallel stems and detailed grain ears, is one of the most productive canvases for DDR detection in U.S. coinage because even small lateral displacements between hubbing impressions produce visible doubling across the numerous fine parallel lines that define the wheat stalks.
