1937 Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002

Description

1937 WDDR-002 is a doubled die reverse on the 1937 Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Strong Class VI extra thickness covers EPU (E PLURIBUS UNUM), the dots, and both wheat ears and stems, and the doubling is heaviest on the lower reverse. Obverse Stage A: a scratch running south from the L of LIBERTY, off its left underside; a NNE scratch off the top of LIBERTY's T; a short SW-to-NE scratch above the date's 1; and a short scratch heading SW from the 9 at its left center. On Stage B these are very weak but still visible. On the Stage A reverse a long clash mark curves across the bottom of the design from the F of OF, passing through the right wheat stem's tip. Also present: a short SW-to-NE scratch through the top of the E in STATES; a short SSW-to-NNE scratch between CENT's T and the second T of STATES; two parallel scratches heading WNW from the E of EPU; X-shaped scratches below the left dot; and many other scratches across the reverse. On Stage B the long clash is still visible and the Stage A scratches are very weak but present. Geoffrey Fults submitted Stage A and Albert B. Raddi Stage B. The Coppercoins number is 1937P-1DR-003. Wexler asks anyone who believes they have a Stage B coin to let him photograph it for his files and this listing. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
