1937 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-006

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-1387 and DMR-021, this 1937 Lincoln Wheat Cent doubled die reverse exhibits light spread in a southward direction on ONE CENT and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Three distinct die stages have been documented: Stage A in early die state remains unconfirmed, Stage B shows both the reverse and obverse at early-to-mid die state, and Stage C in late die state is also unconfirmed. Doubled die reverses on Wheat Cents form during the hubbing process when the hub and working die fail to align perfectly across multiple impressions, leaving a ghost image of the design shifted from the primary strike. The southward spread on this variety indicates the second hub impression was displaced slightly downward relative to the first. Struck during the Great Depression era, the 1937 Philadelphia Mint cent had a mintage of over 309 million pieces — an enormous output that consumed many die pairs, each one a candidate for misalignment during hubbing. The sixth documented DDR for this date reflects the systematic variety research that has cataloged dozens of minor doubled dies across the Wheat Cent series.
