Description

Spread toward the center on the date, designer's initials, and IN GOD WE TRUST characterizes WDDO-013 on the 1936 Mercury Dime, a variety attributed by the Wexler Team. Center-directed spread indicates the secondary hub impression was displaced inward relative to the primary, creating doubling that shifts design elements toward the coin's interior rather than outward or laterally. Two die markers provide reliable confirmation independent of the doubling itself: on the obverse, a small die gouge appears above the right side of the U in TRUST, and on the reverse, a small die gouge sits north of the left side of the M in DIME. Cross-referenced as 1936 10c WDDO-013 under the Wexler system, this business strike was produced at Philadelphia in 90% silver. Adolph Weinman's Mercury Dime, more accurately the Winged Liberty Head, features fine detail on both the obverse fasces and winged cap that makes hub doubling readily apparent. The 1936 date saw substantial production across all three mints, and varieties on the Philadelphia issue reward patient examination of the date and motto areas where center-directed spread is most detectable.
