1936 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-005

Description

Class II spread towards the center on the date, Adolph A. Weinman's designer initials, and slightly on the Y in LIBERTY identifies this 1936 Mercury Dime doubled die obverse. Weinman's Winged Liberty Head design, often mistakenly called the Mercury Dime, features a cap adorned with wings symbolizing freedom of thought, and the design's fine detail around the face, wings, and fasces-bearing reverse made it a frequent canvas for detectable hub doubling. Obverse markers are distinctive: a small die gouge below the R in TRUST, a short horizontal die gouge at the back of the eye, and a die crack running from the rim to the left of the T in LIBERTY into the wing on the bonnet. Reverse: none significant. Cross-referenced under the Wexler system as 1936 10¢ WDDO-005, with no other known attributions. The Wexler Team attributed this variety.
