1936 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-006
Error
Description
Very light triple spread on the left wheat ear combined with extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM and both wheat ears and stems makes this sixth doubled die reverse for the 1936 Lincoln Wheat Cent notable for showing three-way displacement — a tripled die rather than a simple doubled die, indicating the hub was impressed into the die three times with slight misalignment between each impression. Cataloged by VarietyVista with die marker codes UVC-1340 and DMR-007, the die stage documentation shows Stage A (EDS, unconfirmed), Stage B (MDS, unconfirmed), and Stage C with the reverse in Late to Mid Die State (LMDS) and the obverse listed as DDO-005 in LMDS with "Full R in LIBERTY." The obverse die pairing with DDO-005 means this reverse die was married to a die that itself carries doubled die obverse characteristics — a DDO/DDR combination die marriage that doubled die collectors prize. The 1936 Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck during the Great Depression era, when mintages were recovering from the severe lows of the early 1930s. Philadelphia's 1936 production of approximately 309 million cents marked a significant rebound from Depression-era minimums. The tripling phenomenon, where three hub impressions create two sets of secondary images, is considerably rarer than standard doubling and adds both attribution complexity and collector premium to varieties where it is documented.
