1936 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-012

Description

Light extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM and both wheat stems characterizes this 1936 Lincoln wheat cent reverse variety, cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-1358, DMR-025. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A remains unconfirmed at early die state; Stage B is unconfirmed at mid-die state; and Stage C reaches late die state with a die dent through PL of PLURIBUS and a light die crack over the V.D.B. designer's initials at the base of the reverse. The progression from an apparently clean early state to visible deterioration at Stage C traces the working life of this die through its full production run. DDR-012 sits among the many subtle doubled die reverses cataloged for the mid-1930s wheat cents, a period of relatively high production following the sharply reduced mintages of the early Depression years when Philadelphia output began recovering.
