1936 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-002

Description

Among the stronger Lincoln Wheat Cent doubled die reverses of the 1930s, the 1936 DDR-002 displays strong extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM, the dots, both wheat ears and stems, and OF AMERICA. Cataloged as UVC-1349 and DMR-016 in the VarietyVista system, three die stages document the progression. Stage A is an unconfirmed early die state. Stage B is an unconfirmed mid-die-state. Stage C, at late die state, develops a diagnostic die gouge dot between the C of CENT and the left wheat ear, with the obverse also at LDS. The strong extra thickness across multiple reverse design elements—spanning from the motto through the denomination details and into the wheat ear design—makes DDR-002 one of the more visually accessible doubled die reverses from this era. The Stage C die gouge dot between CENT and the wheat ear provides a useful late-stage attribution marker, positioned where it can be spotted relatively quickly as a small raised dot in an otherwise open field area.
