1935-S Doubled Die Reverse DDR-003
Error
Description
From the final year of San Francisco Mint Buffalo Nickel production, this DDR-003 exhibits medium spread northward on PL of PLURIBUS and across the buffalo's back and head — substantial enough to be visible under moderate magnification. The 1935-S represents the terminal San Francisco date for James Earle Fraser's iconic design, making die varieties from this issue attractive to both type collectors and Buffalo Nickel specialists. Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-153 with die marker reference DMR-004, three die states are documented with an unusual characteristic: at Stage B, the reverse is at early-to-middle die state while the obverse is at late-to-middle die state — a mismatch suggesting the obverse die was previously paired with an earlier reverse before being combined with this DDR reverse. The spread across PL and the buffalo's back and head covers both lettering and design elements, providing multiple attribution points. Three documented DDRs for 1935-S reflects ongoing research into Buffalo Nickel varieties, where the bold relief of Fraser's design makes doubling more readily detectable than on flatter modern coins.
