Identified by David Close, the 1934-S VAM-4 is classified as B2c and carries the designation "Doubled Far Right Reverse," identifying its primary diagnostic: the rays around LLAR — the final four letters of DOLLAR on the reverse — exhibit clear doubling. Rated I-3 for collector interest and R-5 for rarity, this variety has an estimated population of only 13 to 30 confirmed specimens. That R-5 designation alone would mark VAM-4 as significant, but its scarcity is compounded by the 1934-S Peace Dollar's mintage of just 1,011,000 pieces — one of the lowest in the series. Anthony de Francisci's design was struck in 90% silver at 26.73 grams on 38.1mm planchets during what was nearly the final year of Peace Dollar production, with only 1935 following before the series concluded. The combination of R-5 rarity and a low-mintage host coin makes the 1934-S VAM-4 one of the most genuinely elusive Peace Dollar die varieties.
