Description
Reported in 2009, the 1934-D VAM-5B "High Micro D, Die Scratch Motto" identifies a Peace Dollar reverse die distinguished by two features: a D mintmark both set high and noticeably smaller than standard, and a short shallow vertical die scratch between the D and W of GOD WE. Classified as III-1 with reverse die B2c, rated I-2 and R-5 (31 to 75 known), this variety documents the use of a smaller-than-normal mintmark punch — the "Micro D" — positioned higher than intended. Mintmark size variation occurred because the Mint maintained multiple punch sizes, and occasionally a smaller or different-vintage punch was selected. The elevated positioning resulted from the engraver placing the punch above the standard location during hand-application. The scratch between D and W provides a secondary marker. The 1934-D Peace Dollar stands near the end of the series — only 1935 followed before production ceased. De Francisci's design was struck in 90% silver at 38.1mm at Denver. Examine the D mintmark for its reduced size and elevated position, and verify the scratch between D and W in GOD WE.
