Description

Distinguished by a dual mintmark anomaly, VAM-5 on the 1934-D Peace Dollar features a "High Micro D" — a Denver mintmark that is both noticeably smaller than the standard punch size and positioned higher than normal placement on the reverse. Discovered by Steve Sabella in January 1979, this variety carries ratings of I-2 (Interest level 2, indicating solid collector interest) and R-3 (Rarity 3, signifying a scarce variety requiring deliberate searching to locate). The combination of reduced size and elevated position makes the mintmark immediately suspect to experienced collectors, as the standard D punch sits lower and appears measurably larger. Anthony de Francisci's reverse features a perched eagle before sunlight rays, with the D mintmark positioned below the eagle's tail. The 1934-D is one of the scarcer Peace Dollar dates, adding base-coin scarcity to the variety premium. Struck at the Denver Mint in 90% silver at 26.73 grams on 38.1mm planchets. Examine the D mintmark under 7x to 10x magnification, comparing its size against a standard 1934-D punch and noting its elevated vertical position relative to the eagle's tail.
