Description
Michigan advertised itself as a vacation state at Chicago's 1933 Century of Progress with this medal, HK-473. The obverse carries the state seal within a circle, "Michigan" between stars above and "A Century of Progress Exposition" curving around the bottom. On the reverse, Michigan itself appears as a relief map inside a beaded circle, with "The Nation's Playground" across the top and the invitation "Come to Michigan to Play" below. Hibler and Kappen list it first in gilt with a reddish tone, 33 mm, and the same design also exists in aluminum (HK-473a), Dow metal (HK-473b) and German silver (HK-473c). The fair drew exhibits from nearly every state, many gathered in the great Hall of States while others put up buildings of their own.
