Description

New York's Veteran Corps of Artillery traced its origin to 1790, and when the United States went to war in 1917 Thomas L. Elder, then 40, signed up with it. That spring the corps stood as guard of honor at New York's City Hall for two foreign missions, Marshal Joffre's French party on May 9 and A. J. Balfour's British party on May 11, and Elder recorded the service on this medal. The reverse lays out the dates and names under the corps' title, ending with the place, City Hall. On the obverse is the Confederation altar scene copied from the forty-dollar notes of 1778-1779. HK-444 is brass, 38 mm, DeLorey 95, and belongs to a run that also includes silver, copper, nickel-silver, white metal, aluminum, fiber, oreide and lead.
