Description

HK-447 is the aluminum striking of Thomas L. Elder's 1917 Veteran Corps of Artillery medal, 38 mm, DeLorey 95. Its reverse explains in short centered lines that the New York corps served as an honor guard twice that May, for Joffre's French delegation on the 9th and for Balfour's British one on the 11th, and names City Hall around the lower edge. Joffre and Balfour had crossed the Atlantic to help speed the American war effort after the declaration of war that April. The obverse, an altar under an all-seeing eye with thirteen stars and "Confederation," comes from the Continental currency of 1778-1779. Elder, who belonged to the corps, also struck the reverse in silver, copper, brass, nickel-silver and white metal, and in fiber, oreide and lead.
