Description

Thomas L. Elder borrowed the obverse of this 1917 medal from Revolutionary paper money: it is the Confederation vignette of the forty-dollar notes the Continental Congress issued in 1778 and 1779. Clouds fill the top, an all-seeing eye sends rays down onto a flaming altar ringed by thirteen eight-pointed stars, and "Confederation" runs on a ribbon along the lower border. The reverse honors the French and British officials who came to the United States that spring, naming them in eight lines under a small scroll, with a border legend explaining the purpose of the striking. HK-435 is the silver version, struck on a thin planchet, 38 mm, DeLorey 94. Elder also struck the design in copper on a regular planchet (HK-436), brass (HK-437), nickel-silver (HK-438), white metal (HK-439), aluminum (HK-440) and lead (HK-441).
