Description

Jeff Oxman discovered this variety in November 2006, identifying a 1928 San Francisco Mint Peace Dollar with doubled motto and a medium high S mint mark. The doubling appears on "D WE TR" of IN GOD WE TRUST displaced to the right, extending through the back of the hair bun, the back of the hair, the back of Liberty's neck, and the designer's initials — Anthony de Francisci's monogram. Classified as 7 II 5 - B2b with a rarity rating of I-2 R-5, the R-5 designation indicates very scarce survival of 13 to 30 known examples. A faint diagonal polishing line below the front tiara band serves as a subtle die marker. The 1928-S Peace Dollar is a recognized key date in the series with a mintage of only 1,632,000 — the lowest regular-issue San Francisco Peace Dollar production — making any die variety on this date particularly significant to collectors who combine date rarity with variety attribution. The medium high S describes a mint mark punched slightly above its standard vertical position on the reverse. =1928-S VAM-7 Doubled Motto to Right, Medium High S= Discovered by Jeff Oxman, November 2006.
