Description

The 1926 Sesquicentennial of American Independence Commemorative Gold Quarter Eagle is a commemorative gold coin struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The Philadelphia Mint struck 200,226 quarter eagles in May and June 1926; 154,207 were returned and melted, leaving 46,019. Issued in 1926 as a companion piece to the Sesquicentennial half dollar, this $2.50 gold coin commemorated the 150th anniversary of American independence. The obverse features Liberty standing and holding a torch of freedom and a scroll representing the Declaration of Independence, while the reverse displays Independence Hall in Philadelphia, where the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776. Designed by John R. Sinnock. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams, 18 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7466.
