Description

The 1916 McKinley Memorial Commemorative Gold Dollar is a commemorative dollar struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The Philadelphia Mint struck 20,026 gold dollars dated 1916, 26 of them for the Assay Commission; 10,023 McKinley dollars were later melted, and the Mint did not record how many of them were dated 1916. Issued in 1916 and 1917 to raise funds for the construction of a memorial to President McKinley in Niles, Ohio, his birthplace. The obverse features a bust of President William McKinley facing left, while the reverse displays the McKinley Memorial building in Niles, Ohio, McKinley's birthplace. Designed by Charles E. Barber/George T. Morgan. The first year of issue with approximately 9,977 pieces distributed. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 1.672 grams, 15 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7454. The Mint struck 20,026 dollars dated 1916 and 10,014 dated 1917; 10,023 were later melted, and the Mint kept no record of how they divided by date. Gold dollars were struck again for the 1922 Grant centennial.
