Description
The 1903 Proof Louisiana Purchase Exposition Commemorative Gold Dollar - Jefferson is a proof Gold Dollar struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Classic Gold Commemoratives (1903-1926) series. The first 100 coins of each 1903 design were struck as proofs and presented mounted on certificates; they were not sold to the public. The obverse features designs varying by commemorative issue and the reverse displays designs varying by commemorative issue. Produced during the Progressive Era, when President Theodore Roosevelt championed a renaissance in American coin design. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 1.672 grams, 15 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7482.
