Description

Adam Pietz signed this Sesquicentennial token with an interlaced AP below the date 1926, beside a woman's head facing left within the legend "Sesqui-Centennial-International-Exposition-Philadelphia." Across the reverse spreads an eagle so large that it covers almost the whole field, the sun and its rays behind it, with "Lucky Token" above. On the eagle's breast is a swastika over a leaf, here the old good-luck sign the legend refers to, years before the emblem took on its later meaning. HK-457a is the bronze striking of this pair of dies, 35 mm; the gilt version is HK-457. Pietz paired the same eagle with a Liberty Bell obverse dated 1776 and 1926 for HK-457b and HK-457c. The exposition, which filled League Island Park in South Philadelphia through the summer and autumn of 1926, marked a century and a half since the Declaration of Independence.
