Description

Discovered in June 2012 by Bill Toland, this San Francisco Mint Peace Dollar — designated II1 - B2a, I-3, R-6 — exhibits die file lines at clash mark locations accompanied by large missing portions of reverse rays to the right of the olive leaves. The filing represents the Mint's attempt to remove clash marks, while the missing ray segments indicate areas where filing was aggressive enough to obliterate portions of the design. This interplay between repair and collateral damage is characteristic of heavily clashed Peace Dollar dies, where the bold raised rays were vulnerable to both receiving clash impressions and losing definition during maintenance. The VAM catalog notes that VAM-1AB appears to be a duplicate listing of VAM-1J, raising the possibility that both designations describe the same die pair documented independently — a situation that occasionally arises in the open-source attribution process. The R-6 rarity rating indicates an estimated 200 to 500 survivors.
