Description

Designated VAM-1 in the Van Allen-Mallis catalog, this 1922-S Peace Dollar represents the "Early Design" variety — the baseline die pairing from which other 1922-S varieties diverge. Discovered by Robert Maxey in January 1981, VAM-1 features normal obverse and reverse dies without distinguishing die cracks, polishing, or clashing. It carries the VAMWorld notation "I II 1 - B1a (Early Design)" and a rarity rating of R-1, the most common tier — readily obtainable examples serving as the reference point for comparing scarcer 1922-S die pairings. Anthony de Francisci's Peace Dollar design, introduced in 1921 to commemorate the end of World War I, features Liberty wearing a radiate crown on the obverse and a perched eagle before sunlight rays on the reverse. Struck at the San Francisco Mint in 90% silver at 26.73 grams on 38.1mm planchets. While VAM-1 lacks the dramatic die features of higher-numbered VAMs, it holds value as the foundation of the 1922-S VAM set and provides the normal-die reference essential for identifying departures in other varieties.
