1921-P VAM-1P

Description

Discovered by David Close, the 1921-P VAM-1P is among the most significant Peace Dollar varieties in the VAMWorld catalog. It is catalogued under the parent 1921 Peace Dollar — Sandblasted Antique Finish — the rare high-relief inaugural design struck with a unique sandblasted antique surface distinct from both regular business strikes and standard Satin Proofs. Full designation: 1P I 1 — Aa (Satin Proof Reverse Die with Polishing Lines). The defining feature is the die pairing: the reverse is a Satin Proof die, while the obverse is not a standard Satin Proof obverse — it is a different die used for business-strike production. The obverse, IV 1, shows scattered polishing lines near the rim. Die markers include a single weak horizontal polishing line at the top inside of the upper loop of the 2, and double horizontal polishing lines from the right top of the uppermost hair curl in the rays. This same obverse was also used for VAM-1Z. The reverse of VAM-1H must be present. The sandblasted finish 1921 Peace Dollar is itself an extreme rarity; the Satin Proof reverse pairing of VAM-1P elevates it further.
