1919 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent Rim Cud (Reverse, Just Past 12:00)
Error
Description
This 1919 (S) Lincoln Wheat cent displays a rim cud on the reverse positioned just clockwise of 12:00. It formed when the reverse die lost part of its rim gutter: on the coin it appears as a raised interruption in the design rim that tracks the rim's course. Rim cuds at the top of the reverse interrupt the rim above E PLURIBUS UNUM, and their position relative to the lettering serves as the primary diagnostic for matching a coin to a specific failed die. On this coin the cud runs along the rim from about the end of PLURIBUS to the first U of UNUM. Cuds on Coins documents several 1919-S reverse rim cuds near the top of the coin (CU-1c-1919S-04R and 05R, 13R and 14, 15R, and 07R, 08 and 09); this break matches none of them. The 1919-S produced an unusually large number of documented rim failures across its 139,760,000-piece mintage.
