Description

Struck during the final year of the First World War, CU-1C-1918S-02R is the second cataloged rim cud on the 1918 San Francisco Lincoln Wheat cent. The war's conclusion in November 1918 did not immediately relieve production pressure at the branch mints — military demobilization generated its own coinage demands as returning soldiers re-entered civilian economic life. San Francisco's 1918-S cent production continued at significant volume, and the same logistical challenges that plagued die supply during 1917 persisted through the armistice period. Dies shipped from Philadelphia required days of rail transit across the continent, and any shortfall forced the mint to extend die service life beyond the optimal retirement point. The 02R designation indicates this is the second verified rim cud for the date, cataloged by the Cuds on Coins research team. Wheat cents from the late 1910s circulated heavily in an era before widespread coin collecting, meaning cud varieties from these dates often survive in well-worn condition, with the raised cud mass itself sometimes serving as the most prominent remaining feature on otherwise smooth coins.
