1918 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent Rim Cud and Pre-Cud (Reverse)
Error
Description
This 1918-S Lincoln Wheat Cent shows a reverse rim cud at about the 2:30 position and a pre-cud between 3:00 and 4:00. The rim cud matches the Cuds on Coins variety CU-1C-1918S-01R, and the coin is very likely from the same reverse die. A rim cud is the loss of part of the die's rim gutter; on the coin it appears as a raised interruption in the rim that follows the rim's curve. The pre-cud is a separate failure: an advanced die crack where a section of the die had begun to separate but had not broken free. The Cuds on Coins reference example for CU-1C-1918S-01R is worn, and while a faint outline of the top of a die crack can be seen in the same area, it cannot be determined whether that is the start of this pre-cud or a crack lost to wear. This coin therefore documents either a pre-cud present on the CU-1C-1918S-01R die that the reference example does not show, or a later die state of that die.
