Description
Two days of ceremony at New York's City Hall in May 1917 are the subject of HK-445. On May 9 Elder's artillery veterans formed the guard of honor for Marshal Joffre's French delegation, and on May 11 for Balfour's party from Britain; both missions had come to confer with President Wilson about the war, which the United States had entered on April 6 after Germany's return to unrestricted submarine warfare. Thomas L. Elder, a member of the corps, struck the medal, and the reverse even keeps the exclamation mark he put after "May 9th!" The obverse is his Confederation altar design from Continental paper money. HK-445 is nickel-silver, 38 mm, DeLorey 95.
