Description

"Acted as Guard of Honor" is the heart of the reverse of HK-442, Thomas L. Elder's medal for his own unit, New York's Veteran Corps of Artillery. The text goes on to say whom the corps escorted and when: Joffre with his French party on the ninth of May, then Balfour with the British on the eleventh, both at City Hall in 1917, under the corps' title at the top. Elder had joined the corps right after the United States entered the war. The obverse repeats the Confederation design of his Visit of Our Allies medal, taken from Continental currency. HK-442 is silver on a thin planchet, 38 mm, DeLorey 95; the other metals run from copper on a regular planchet (HK-443) to lead (HK-448b).
