Description

Lead, a soft and dull metal for a medal, closes the run of Thomas L. Elder's Visit of Our Allies pieces as HK-441, after silver, copper, brass, nickel-silver, white metal and aluminum (HK-435 to HK-440). All share the same dies: on the obverse the altar, all-seeing eye and thirteen stars of the Continental forty-dollar note, labeled "Confederation"; on the reverse a list of the visiting officials of 1917, including two vice-admirals, Chocheprat and De Chair, and Major General Bridges alongside Joffre, Balfour, Viviani and Lord Cunliffe. They came in May of that year, soon after the American declaration of war, to coordinate with President Wilson, passing through New York on the way to Washington. HK-441 measures 38 mm and is DeLorey 94.
