Description
Thomas L. Elder was 40 when the United States entered World War I in 1917, and Hibler and Kappen describe him as loyal to everything American: he enlisted in New York's Veteran Corps of Artillery, a unit first organized in 1790, almost as soon as war was declared. They add that Elder rarely needed much excuse to strike a new medal, and the visit of the Allied missions that May gave him one. HK-439, in white metal, 38 mm, is the medal for that visit, naming Viviani, Joffre, Balfour and the other officials on the reverse. Its obverse, the Confederation altar from Continental paper money, also appears on his companion medal for the Veteran Corps' guard of honor (HK-442 to HK-448b). DeLorey 94.
