Description

Struck at the San Francisco Mint during World War I, this retained cud on a 1917-S Lincoln Wheat Cent documents a die failure on wartime coinage from a branch mint facility. The "R" suffix indicates the retained cud appears on the reverse. A retained cud forms when a section of the die rim fractures but remains partially attached rather than falling away completely, producing a raised distorted area along the coin's edge that retains some design detail — distinguishing it from a full cud, which presents as a completely featureless raised mass. RCD-1c-1917S-01R is the first documented retained cud for the 1917-S date, cataloged in the Cuds on Coins reference system. The variety is also cross-referenced as JCc-1917S_036 in the Jim Curto cent catalog. The 1917-S Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck in bronze (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc). Branch mint Lincoln Cents from the World War I era are generally scarcer than Philadelphia counterparts, adding interest for collectors pursuing die varieties from this period. This variety was documented by the Cuds on Coins reference.
