Description

The 1917 McKinley Memorial Commemorative Gold Dollar is a commemorative dollar struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The Philadelphia Mint struck 10,014 gold dollars dated 1917, 14 of them for the Assay Commission; 10,023 McKinley dollars were later melted, and the Mint did not record how many of them were dated 1917. Issued in 1916 and 1917 to raise funds for the construction of a memorial to President McKinley in Niles, Ohio, his birthplace. The obverse features a bust of President William McKinley facing left, while the reverse displays the McKinley Memorial building in Niles, Ohio, McKinley's birthplace. Designed by Charles E. Barber/George T. Morgan. The second and final year with approximately 10,000 pieces distributed. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 1.672 grams, 15 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7455. The Mint struck 20,026 dollars dated 1916 and 10,014 dated 1917; 10,023 were later melted, and the Mint kept no record of how they divided by date. Gold dollars were struck again for the 1922 Grant centennial.
