Description

DDR-002, which Wexler numbers WDDR-003, is a doubled die reverse on the 1913 Type 1 Buffalo nickel with a medium spread on the E PLU of PLURIBUS and on the bison's fur at the back of its upper neck. Both catalogs list it as FS-802 (Wexler writes it FS-05-1913-802). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties calls the doubling strong Class IV on E PLURIBUS UNUM, with more doubling on the hair along the top of the bison's back and on its ear and horn. On the obverse a short, slanted die gouge marks the upper part of the Indian's neck. The reverse is the Type I reverse, with east-west die scratches crossing UNITED at its ED and STATES at its first S, a short die scratch between the bison's front legs, and a slanted die scratch jutting from the upper part of its rear left leg. Wayne Carson submitted the coin, CONECA lists the die as 2-R-IV+VIII, and Wexler notes that Brian Ribar took the photos. VarietyVista also credits Wayne Carson and gives the reverse its design-variety code RDV-001 (Bison on mound). Under its marker codes UVC-007 and DMR-007 it confirms stage A, with reverse and obverse in an early die state; a middle stage B and a late stage C are unconfirmed.
