1877 (CC) Seated Liberty Dime - C Overdate WOVD-001

Description

Bearing the CC mint mark of the Carson City Mint in Nevada, which operated from 1870 to 1893, this 1877-CC Seated Liberty Dime overdate preserves traces of an earlier date beneath the final 1877 digits; Wexler reads it as 1877/6. Overdates were created when a die already dated for an earlier year was re-dated by punching the new digits over the old ones, leaving remnants of the original numerals visible beneath the corrected date. This saved the Mint the cost of a new die. It is cross-referenced as Cherrypickers FS-10-1877CC-301 in the Fivaz-Stanton guide and listed by Wexler as 1877-CC 10¢ WOVD-001, submitted by Roger Beckner. Wexler's obverse markers include a gouge left of the shield, under LIBERTY, and a faint crack across the tops of the letters of AMERICA. The Seated Liberty Dime design by Christian Gobrecht served from 1837 through 1891.
