1883 Overdate WOVD-001
Error
Description
Struck in the final year of the Shield Nickel series (1866-1883), this 1883 WOVD-001 is an overdate variety where traces of an underlying date digit are visible beneath the 1883 date. Overdates occurred when a die originally hubbed or punched with one year's date was re-entered with a subsequent year's hub, leaving remnants of the earlier numerals. Cross-referenced as Cherrypickers FS-05-1883-301, Fletcher F-08, and Spindel S1-5001, this variety carries broad recognition across multiple attribution systems. The Shield Nickel's distinctive obverse design featuring a large shield was replaced in 1883 by the Liberty Head Nickel, making this overdate a terminal-year variety from a series undergoing its final production run. Attributed by the Wexler Team under the designation 1883 5-cent Shield WOVD-001.
