1909 Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Reverse VDDR-063

Description

Sixty-third in VarietyVista's catalog of doubled die reverses for the first-year 1909 Lincoln Cent, this variety shares the same general doubling pattern as other 1909 DDRs — light spread across the reverse inscriptions — but is distinguished by its unique die identity and stage progression. Like its companion varieties, the reverse corresponds to either RDV-004 (deep-cut N, no V.D.B. initials) or RDV-003 (shallow-cut N, no V.D.B.), both versions of Brenner's reverse from which his initials were removed after public controversy. The die stages reveal this variety's character: Stage A remains unconfirmed in early die state, while Stage B at early-to-mid die state shows light die cracks from the right wheat lines and grains to the rim, with the obverse also at early-to-mid die state. These Stage B die cracks serve as attribution markers that separate VDDR-063 from the dozens of other 1909 DDR varieties exhibiting similar spread patterns. Each doubled die reverse results from an independent hubbing event on a distinct working die, meaning VDDR-051 and VDDR-063 were created by separate mechanical incidents despite producing visually comparable doubling.
