Description

Light spread characterizes this 1909 Lincoln Wheat Cent doubled die reverse, visible on TE of UNITED, F of OF, TA of STATES, and M of AMERICA. Two die stages have been confirmed: Stage B exhibits a die crack running from the left wheat lines to the rim at Early-to-Mid Die State, along with a light die crack from the shoulder to the rim also at EMDS. Stage A in Early Die State and Stage C in Late Die State remain unconfirmed. The reverse die used for VDDR-062 is identified as either RDV-004 (deep cut N, no V.D.B.) or RDV-003 (shallow cut N, no V.D.B.), where the RDV designation indicates the Reverse Design Variety classification. The "no V.D.B." notation refers to the reverse dies produced after Victor David Brenner's initials were removed from the reverse partway through 1909 production. This removal of the designer's initials mid-year created distinct reverse die types that collectors use alongside the doubled die characteristics to narrow attribution on these early Lincoln Cent varieties.
