1909 Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Reverse VDDR-057

Description

From the same historic first year of Lincoln Cent production, VDDR-057 records another distinct doubled die reverse with light spread on TE of UNITED, the F of OF, TA of STATES, and M of AMERICA. While the affected lettering matches the pattern seen on VDDR-055, this variety originated from a different reverse die with its own unique progression of die states and crack patterns. Stage A remains unconfirmed in Early Die State. Stage B developed a die crack from the upper left wheat lines to the rim and a separate crack from the bust point to the rim, both appearing in Early to Mid-Die State. Stage C in Late Die State is unconfirmed. The reverse carries the RDV-004 identification with a deep cut N and no V.D.B. initials, or RDV-003 with a shallow cut N and no V.D.B. The left-side wheat grain die crack on this variety contrasts with the right-side crack pattern found on VDDR-055, providing a clear diagnostic separation between the two dies despite their similar doubling characteristics. Collectors examining 1909 Lincoln Cents without the V.D.B. initials should inspect the reverse lettering carefully for the subtle spread that distinguishes this fifty-seventh cataloged DDR.
