Description

Sharing the same hub doubling origin as VDDR-019 and other members of the 1909 Lincoln Cent doubled die reverse family, VDDR-054 is identified by its own distinctive die crack pattern: a crack extending from the upper left wheat stalk to the rim. This crack appears in the early-to-mid die state progression and serves as the primary diagnostic separating VDDR-054 from the dozens of other 1909 VDDRs that carry identical spread from the common hub doubling event. The reverse die is associated with both RDV-004 (deep-cut N, no V.D.B.) and RDV-003 (shallow-cut N, no V.D.B.) designations. The underlying doubling pattern across the series produces similar extra thickness on reverse lettering, but since all these varieties trace to the same hub impression, collectors rely on individual die characteristics rather than the doubling itself for attribution. The upper-left-wheat-to-rim crack on VDDR-054 contrasts with the north-south shoulder-to-rim crack found on VDDR-019, illustrating how each working die developed its own failure patterns during the striking process despite sharing a common origin.
