Description

From the inaugural year of the Lincoln Cent, this fifty-first VarietyVista doubled die reverse documents hubbing displacement on the very first reverse design to bear Victor David Brenner's wheat ears motif. The doubling manifests as light spread on TE of UNITED, F of OF, TA of STATES, and M of AMERICA — subtle displacement across multiple inscription elements consistent with a single misaligned hubbing impression. The reverse is identified as either RDV-004 (deep-cut N, no V.D.B. initials) or RDV-003 (shallow-cut N, no V.D.B.), both versions from which Brenner's initials had been removed after public controversy over their prominence. Three die stages are documented: Stage A in early die state and Stage B at mid-die state, both awaiting further confirmation, and Stage C where die cracks developed as the die approached end of life. The progression from early through late die state tracks how this doubled die evolved across its working life. Fifty-one DDR varieties for the 1909 date alone reflects how intensely the Lincoln Cent's first year has been studied by variety specialists.
